Race Meeting Cancellation

END-OF-SEASON MEETING, SUNDAY 20TH OCTOBER

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news yet again! I’ve been up to Braxted today to make an assessment of conditions and, hopefully, to cut the grass. Even I, as the “Club Optimist”, was dubious before I got there! To say that conditions are not good would be an understatement. It is going to be impossible to even attempt to drive onto the field as there are very deep ruts full of water at the entrance, and heavy machinery going to and fro across the field has compounded the problem. Added to this, the whole field and track is extremely wet and ‘squelchy’ under foot and the track full of worm casts! Unfortunately, at this time of year if there has been rain the water table is so high that the field does not drain quickly enough – unlike the Summer months. With rain forecast over the weekend, the situation will only get worse.

After a good off-road season it’s a great shame to have to end on a sad note, but I’m afraid there is no option but to cancel Sunday’s Meeting. Nobody will thank MERCC if we try to go ahead and have problems before we even start. We will just have to accept that nature has beaten us in the end!

I will get the final points for the Braxted Series worked out, and these will be put on the website and Facebook. Trophies for the winners will be presented at the MERCC AGM on Saturday 4th January, or kept by until I see the drivers concerned. There are also many trophy labels to distribute. Ironically, I picked up a box of trophies this morning in readiness for Sunday!

I’m sure you will understand why I have had to make the decision to cancel Sunday’s Meeting – I was looking forward to it, and to winding up the season on a good note. I would like to thank all those members and non-members who have supported our Meetings throughout the 2013 season and look forward to seeing you racing at Braxted in 2014.

Braxted Open Results

2013.10.06 Braxted Open Results

All the rain prior to the weekend may have deterred many drivers from turning up, probably assuming that the field and track would be too wet. Yes, the grass was pretty wet when it was cut and indeed the grass was damp on the Sunday morning. However warm sunshine soon dried the track after the first Round and everyone had a good day’s racing. Pity the attendance was so low, but all credit to those who did make the effort to support the Meeting.

The volunteers who had the (messy) job of setting out the track did a splendid job, producing a fast and flowing design which ran clockwise and incorporated all fixed features. Before racing started, Lee Harris treated us to a flying display with his Quadcopter, equipped with video camera! Four Rounds of qualifying were held, plus Finals.

After the track was cleared, the survivors posed for a photo and all went away happy!

Race Meeting Cancellation

Bad news! The field at Braxted is waterlogged and, with more rain forecast for the weekend, I feel that it is better to cancel Sunday’s Meeting at this stage rather than leaving it to the last minute. Also, it would be unwise to chance having a situation like we had at the end of last season with vehicles getting stuck on the field. I regret having to make this decision, but I’m sure you will agree that it would not be wise taking a risk. In addition, some flooding is developing in Braxted Park Road.

The last Meeting of the season is scheduled for Sunday, 20th October so let’s keep our fingers crossed that the Weather Gods will be on our side! This Meeting will be a 2-in-1, i.e. combined Series/Open, with plenty of trophies. I Look forward to seeing you.

Off Road Series Round 7 Results

2013.09.15 Off Road Series Round 7 Results

Firstly, my thanks to Alan and Kristian Gibbs for running the Race Meeting in my absence and also to all those who set out and cleared the track. Rain prior to Race Day had threatened to disrupt the event although the field and track were fine and it went ahead as planned. Numbers were down somewhat, no doubt due to the horrendous weather forecast, but 20 hardy souls turned up to race.

Three categories were raced: 1/8th Nitro/Electric, 1/10th 2wd Electric and 1/10th 4wd Electric Buggies. Alan kept things moving and everyone cooperated to try to beat the bad weather that was on the way. Four rounds of Qualifying, plus Finals for all were run and the Race Meeting finished before the rain finally came down.

Well done, everybody!

Off Road Series Round 6 Results

2013.09.01 Off Road Series Round 6 Results

A great clockwise-running track design, with both fast and technical sections, a variety of classes and warm sunny weather made for a very enjoyable day’s racing – a warm welcome to three new Junior drivers in addition. All features were utilised, with 5 heats, 4 rounds of Qualifying, and Finals for all.

2013.09.01 The Track

The 1/8th Electric and Nitros were run together throughout the day, providing some very fast and close racing! The SCT’s ran with the 4wd Electrics in the heats, but ran in their own Final. The dust was rising all day, at times making it look as if steam was coming out of the ground (Geothermal Energy at Braxted?)!

Thanks to all who turned out for providing a friendly atmosphere.

August Bank Holiday Open

2013.08.26 BH Monday Open Results

I’m sure we were all apprehensive about what to expect after the torrential rain two days before the Meeting. We need not have worried as Braxted delivered as usual. There was no water-logging of the field or track and the grass had greened up nicely. A good attendance and a variety of classes, combined with very warm and sunny weather all day, provided the perfect recipe for a good meeting. The track design was clockwise running, with several ‘technical’ sections, and all features utilised.

2013.08.26 The Track

Four Rounds of six heats were run, plus Finals, and contrary to what might have been expected a significant number of drivers improved their times as the day went on – proves that our FTQ system of Qualifying does work!

A friendly atmosphere, and smiles all round, indicated that everyone was enjoying themselves. It just happened to be Lee Hedges’ birthday and he celebrated with FTQ & Final wins in 3 classes! He also provided birthday cake (delicious – thanks, Lee!) for anyone who wanted it! All-in-all, a great day.

Braxted Open Results

2013.08.04 Braxted Open Results

With rain during the week since the last meeting it was amazing how much green grass had appeared! The track design was exactly the same, and the heavy overnight dew was soon gone. Surprisingly, only two 1/8th Electric and one SCT were in evidence so these raced with the Nitros and 4wd Electrics respectively.

2013.08.04 The Track

The weather was great, the meeting friendly, and everybody enjoyed themselves. Four Rounds of Heats, ‘Normal’ Finals, and Marshal-Less Finals were run, with all races being of 6 minutes duration. After the hammering it has taken during the past few weeks the track will now be given a short rest!
